Know the law: native animals are protected

Native animals, birds and reptiles are protected in every Australian state and territory. Harming or killing them can bring heavy fines and even jail. Some native animals that cause damage, like possums and wombats, can be trapped and relocated, but only under your state's rules, often with a permit, and usually within a set distance of where they were caught. The rules differ from state to state, so check yours before you set a trap.
